Projects & News: Imagery

Geomatics Yukon is responsible for coordinating the acquisition of digital satellite imagery for all Departments. GY has an image specialist on contract to assist with the selection and ordering of imagery as well as orthorectifying acquired imagery.

Geomatics Yukon maintains an extensive file-based image repository. In 2010, GY implemented ESRI’s ArcGIS 9.3.1 Image Server technology and started migrating the file-based image repository to serving imagery via image services. This was a challenging process; however, with the migration to ArcGIS 10 we have now implemented ESRI’s ArcGIS Server Image extension which has a much more efficient process for serving our large regional datasets.  Geomatics Yukon is currently working on migrating the current file-based image repository to  ESRI’s ArcGIS Server image services.

Satellite Base Mapping

Yukon is in the final year of a Satellite Base Mapping project in partnership with the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in First Nation. This is a multi-year project to build our topographic data infrastructure by developing high-resolution (approximately 1:25,000) scale base data and imagery products. Over the last 2 years 35,000 km2 (approximate 7.5% of Yukon’s land area) have been mapped and orthorectified with GeoEye’s high resolution mono satellite imagery. This imagery was captured over study areas in: Whitehorse and the Southern Lakes, Dawson south to White Gold, and the North Yukon Planning Region.  The focus for the current acquisition season 2011-2012 is to continue mapping large regional areas along the North Yukon coast and Alaska Highway through Teslin, as well as to further explore the use of high resolution imagery for stereo mapping projects in the Dawson corridor.
